Tiles in the hallway

When choosing a floor covering for the hallway, you need to at least “kill two birds with one stone”: make this room highly aesthetic, because it is here that the guests form the first impression of the apartment and the owner, and also provide themselves with a durable and wear-resistant floor, because all the dirt gets into the hallway , dust and moisture from the street. And tile, like nothing else, copes with these two tasks. But you also need to be able to choose it correctly and lay it beautifully.

How to choose tiles in the hallway?

The tiles in the hallway must be selected in accordance with the following parameters:

  1. Waterproof. This property is extremely important here, since we bring a lot of moisture from the street — it flows from wet soles and umbrellas. As a rule, tiles have a low water absorption coefficient, approximately 3-6%. So you don’t have to worry about this.
  2. No slip. Glossy tiles in the hallway are a direct way to the emergency room, if not today, then tomorrow. At hit of the slightest moisture, such covering becomes superslippery. It is better to choose tiles with a rough surface, matte, embossed or with an anti-slip coating. The coefficient of friction must not be less than 0.75.
  3. wear resistance. This indicator should be at the level of 3-5 grades. In any case, no less. This term implies the resistance of the coating to various external factors. And the higher the class, the more the tile resists wear.
  4. Chemical resistance. Cleaning today is carried out mainly with the use of household chemicals. So, the tile must withstand such an aggressive impact. The degree of chemical resistance should be maximum — A and AA.

Hallway tile options

If earlier all the tiles in the hallway on the floor were ceramic and only, today there is a choice between several types.

  1. Tiled or ceramic tiles in the hallway still remains in the lead. It is made of fired clay and has excellent wear resistance. It is presented in a wide range of colors, with all kinds of inserts, drawings, borders. According to its texture, it can be smooth and embossed, and the second option is preferable for the floor in the corridor. The disadvantage of such a tile is its fragility. If a heavy object is dropped on it, it will crack or break. In addition, such a floor turns out to be cold.
  2. Ceramic tiles especially durable. It is made using a technology similar to that used for the manufacture of marble: by mixing two types of clay with the addition of crumbs of granite, quartz and feldspar. Raw materials are processed at high temperatures and under pressure. The difference between such tiles and ceramic ones is that the pattern is applied to its entire thickness, and not just to the top layer. Its cost is an order of magnitude higher, but the performance characteristics are more attractive.
  3. Quartz vinyl tiles — a relatively new flooring that has already settled in many homes. It is produced on the basis of PVC with the addition of quartz sand. Tiles are considered natural and harmless. Thanks to vinyl, this tile is very wear-resistant and is not at all afraid of impacts and other mechanical influences. In addition, this tile is flexible and warm. It can have a glossy and matte surface, in the hallway it is better to lay tiles with a relief surface that does not slip. An additional plus is that this hallway floor tile can be patterned with wood, marble and other natural materials.
  4. «Golden» tile from South Korea — a new finishing material, which got its name due to the highest performance characteristics. It consists of natural crushed stone with the addition of polymers. The bottom layer consists of PVC, above it are stone granules mixed with natural resin. The central layer consists of fiberglass, followed by a film layer with a pattern applied to it and two protective films that resist abrasion and fading of the tiles.
