6 unsustainable household habits that you repeat every day (better to refuse)

In order to make a lifestyle more environmentally friendly, it is not necessary to apply super efforts and limit yourself. Sometimes even minor changes contribute to the preservation of the environment, while they do not create inconvenience and do not reduce the level of quality of life. In this article, we have compiled a list of household habits that harm the environment and suggested options for replacing them.

one Use filter pitcher

A jug filter is more environmentally friendly than buying bottled water, but at the same time, the cartridges in it need to be changed every 2-3 months (that is, 4-6 pieces per year). The jug also becomes unusable over time and must be replaced.

It will be more environmentally friendly to install a water filtration system under the sink. The cartridges in it must be replaced once a year, and some manufacturing companies accept them for recycling.

This option is more convenient for small kitchens also because it practically does not take up free space. A tap for drinking water is installed next to the usual one, you can also choose a special mixer with a double tap. And the system itself consists of three cartridges that are attached to the inner wall of the cabinet.

2 Throw all rubbish in one bucket

Sorting waste has long ceased to be considered something extraordinary. In many cities of Russia there are containers for receiving raw materials for processing, and the process does not require much space. It is enough to use two containers: put non-recyclable garbage in one, and collect plastic, paper, glass and metal in the other.

In the same IKEA, various types of waste sorting containers are sold, which are convenient because they fit compactly next to each other.

3 Use two valve mixers

The supply of fresh water on the planet is not endless. Use less water will help good habits, such as turning off the water when brushing your teeth, lathering dishes or socks. It is much more convenient to do this with a single-lever mixer. It is easy to open and close even with the back of your hand. With two-valve mixers, everything is more complicated: you have to turn the valves with your whole hand, and it takes much longer to adjust the water temperature.

Single-lever faucets will also help you save water and, consequently, reduce your utility bills.

four Buy perishable food

Buying food for the future is convenient when it comes to cereals, sugar and other groceries. But it is not at all profitable to buy large stocks of vegetables, fruits or dairy products. They spoil quickly, especially in the warm season. This harms the environment (most of the harmful greenhouse gases come from organic waste).

It is best to buy this category of products in small batches as needed, and carefully monitor their expiration dates.

For dry bulk products, we recommend using airtight jars and signing the expiration date in order to use first of all those for which it is coming to an end.

5 Wrap leftover food in cling film

Often leftover food is wrapped in cling film. This is done with halves of fruits and vegetables, leftover salad or cheese. Instead of cling film, which is difficult to recycle, food leftovers are best stored in small containers. They will save food from airing, and due to the same shape they will save space in the refrigerator. In addition, they do not have to be thrown away every time after use, just wash them.

In addition to containers, food wrap is replaced by wax napkins. They can be used an unlimited number of times. If the wax coating begins to crumble — apply a new layer of wax to the napkin, and it is ready for use again.

6 Light up rooms with incandescent bulbs

Saving resources is important not only in the matter of fresh water, but also in electricity. Use energy saving bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs. They not only save electricity, but also last much longer.

Do not forget that such lamps can only be disposed of at special collection points, as they contain hazardous substances.
