In the last month of summer, many indoor plants are preparing for the transition to the dormant phase: in autumn and winter they cannot be cut, fertilized, and, moreover, transplanted. Therefore, in August you need to have time to finish all the things that you have been putting off for a long time.

If violet, geranium, hemanthus, orchid, spathiphyllum or other flowers have opened or tied buds, it is advisable to please them with fertilizers for flowering houseplants. So flowering will be longer, and the flower itself will feel better.

It is better to use purchased fertilizers: their composition is balanced and safe for the health of flowers. On sale you can find both universal concentrates or powders, and special ones: for violets, orchids, pelargoniums. Also for feeding use succinic acid, ash, yeast.

2 Replant actively growing

Check: has the pot for ficus, hibiscus, myrtle, dieffenbachia, monstera become too small? If in doubt, it is better to transplant the plants into a larger container. Transplantation is carried out by transshipment, trying not to disturb the root system.

The pot is chosen 2-4 cm larger than the previous one, the soil is special or universal. The soil mixture can be prepared independently. For example, for a ficus, you need to mix peat, humus, sand and soddy soil in equal proportions.

3 Renew the top layer of soil in large

It happens that the flower pot is still “just right”, but the earth in it is already quite old. In this case, updating the top layer will be an excellent alternative to transplanting and at the same time serve as top dressing.

Remove 3-5 cm of soil, pour fresh mixture, water the plant. You won’t have to fertilize the flower until spring — the supply of trace elements in the new soil will be enough for the entire dormant period.

In some regions, the temperature at night can already drop to 0 degrees and below: this means that the flowers that were planted in April-May in a country flower garden or put on an open balcony, it’s time to take them back to the heat. Choose for them the most bright place on the windowsill to avoid stress due to a sudden change in conditions of detention.

5 Prepare bulbs for wintering

While some plants prefer a warm winter, others need to provide a lower temperature for a dormant period. Hippeastrum, amaryllis, wallot, boveya and other bulbs prefer to winter at a temperature of 10-15 ° C, so at the end of August, when they drop their leaves, it is advisable to transfer them to a winter garden, to a warmed balcony or to another place with suitable conditions.

6 Remove wilted buds and yellowed leaves from all plants

The end of summer is the time to audit all the pots, cutting off dry branches, yellow leaves, dead flowers. Firstly, it is useful for the plant itself: this way it can save energy on the nutrition of living leaves, branches, roots. Secondly, without parts that have dried up or lost turgor, the flower will look more aesthetically pleasing, it will be able to delight the owners with lush greenery in autumn and winter.
