The decor of the apartment is not something permanent. Over the course of life, each room undergoes changes — significant and not so much. We periodically update textiles, buy additional decorations, buy something at seasonal sales, and as a result, the appearance of the room changes. Old decor or furniture that you’ve had for a long time may be out of place in a changed environment. Not quite the right style, inappropriate color or outlines that stand out from the general scheme — there are many reasons. There will be no harmony in the decor of the room if the decor or some object does not fit with everything around.

2 Performance of functions is not 100%

Both practical and decorative functions of objects are important. If something from the old furniture ceases to fulfill them 100%, this is a sign that you should think about replacing it. For example, a beautiful armchair has sagged, and it is more uncomfortable to sit on it with a book. Or is it not the furniture, but you? The desk that served during your studies has become useless because you are now always in the office? It is also a sign that it is worth giving or selling it to someone who needs it. Decor is more difficult, but it can also lose its aesthetic component. For example, you used to collect images and figurines of elephants, but now they do not please you and do not interest you. 3 Inappropriate proportions

Comfort is highly valued today: what was comfortable some time ago can now violate the proportions of the room and even interfere with movement. Too large a wall cabinet, a bulky sofa, a table on the aisle that has nowhere to move, and other elements visually “break” the room, depriving it of balance. With decor, the situation can be reversed — too small details create a visual mess and are especially inappropriate in a spacious room.

four Loss of relevance

Sometimes furniture and decor elements simply lose their relevance, you need to come to terms with this. There are items that will someday become “new old”, but this happens with exceptional models, and it’s definitely not worth keeping everything “just in case” in a row. Here it is important not to make a common mistake — instead of throwing away, put, for example, decor in containers and hide it in a closet or pantry. Yes, visually it no longer spoils the room, but it creates a general clutter of the apartment. Leaving old furniture for “overexposure” is more difficult, but don’t delay selling it if you have already made a decision.

5 There are better alternatives

If you accidentally saw a model in a store or on the Internet that, it seemed to you, would fit perfectly into your interior instead of something available, think about it. Maybe a new piece of furniture or decor will finally bring that finishing touch, the absence of which haunted you. Or from a purely functional point of view, the new one will be better. It is not necessary to cut from the shoulder and replace everything by finding the best alternatives (this is already called a global repair). But if one of the previous points made you doubt, and then you still found something to replace it, take it as a “green light”.

So the questions you need to answer are:

• Does the object fit in with everything around?
• Does it perform its function as it should?
• Does it match the basic proportions of the room? Doesn’t it interfere?
• Are the furniture and decor relevant?
• Do you have something in mind that would perform the function much better?
• Are you pleased with everything in the interior of the room and apartment?

After answering these questions, make a decision.
