one Unsuitable finish

The first thing that immediately “kills” the atmosphere of a Scandinavian interior is the wrong finish. If you want to see a discreet northern style at home, then you will have to give up wallpaper with a trendy tropical print. You don’t need to go completely into minimalism either: just pick the same accents that the Danes, Swedes or Finns use. For example, instead of photo wallpaper with a colorful floral pattern, it is better to add a couple of posters with northern forests and rivers to the interior.

2 Different style furniture

If, for example, all the furniture in the room is made in a classic style, then adding a couple of recognizable Scandinavian accessories to it will not create the desired atmosphere in the apartment. The same applies to modern products with chrome and plastic parts. If it is not possible to buy authentic Scandinavian furniture, use a simple rule: look for items made from natural materials (or their high-quality imitations), simple in shape, without decorative elements. The more minimalist the furniture looks, the easier it will be to fit it into the desired style. Don’t be afraid to take your old cabinets, chairs, and armchairs home with you. A small restoration, repainting — and they will play in the Scandi space.

3 Lots of plastic

Scandinavian style implies closeness to nature, so plastic does not fit with it. This applies not only to large interior elements such as chairs, but also to small things: flower pots, decor, bathroom accessories. Walk around the apartment and remove all such items. Replace plastic with wood, ceramics, clay and other natural materials. You will immediately see how the housing will be transformed.

four Ill-conceived palette

The modern Scandi interior has gone beyond the usual color frames and has ceased to be black, white and gray, but neutral shades are still at the heart of its palette. Use achromats in decoration and large furniture so as not to miss. For accents, you can take any colors, but remember that they should look natural and noble. For example, a neon-light green or aquamarine hue does not fit into the Scandinavian aesthetic in any way, but a muted grassy or gray-blue one does.

5 visual noise

If all the basic canons of Scandi style have been observed, but the feeling of the interior is still blurred, just look around. Nordic apartments are famous for their minimalism and clean lines. Perhaps in your home there are too many little things, decor and household items in plain sight. Lay everything out, declutter if needed, and add baskets and boxes for covered storage.

6 Little air

Too dense arrangement of furniture, window sills and walls filled with decor, shelves and racks packed to capacity — all this also makes it difficult to perceive the Scandinavian interior as intended. Rearrange and remove part of the decor, let the apartment have more light and air. If the finishes, furniture and colors were chosen correctly, then the empty areas in the apartment will look harmonious, and not as a flaw.

7 All new

Another reason why a Scandinavian interior can look feigned and not real is that everything is new in it, as if it had just come from a store. Comfort in the northern apartments is created by the feeling that several generations of the family lived here. Therefore, do not forget to fit something beautifully aged into the interior: wooden chairs with slightly worn paint, an old chest of drawers, vintage decor.
