Today, the rustic interior is at the peak of popularity not only among the inhabitants of estates with a picturesque view from the window, but also among the townspeople who are tired of artificial materials and urban landscapes.

The essence of the style is revealed by its name, or rather, a literal translation. «Rusticus» in translation from the language of the Ancient Romans sounds like «rustic, uncouth.»

Many perceive this trend in interior design as an exaggerated country style. This version is more relevant for regions where houses are built surrounded by forests. But even there, such a structure is perceived as a kind of fabulous surroundings.

More restrained fans of the rustic style prefer the wording «country house style with elements of raw natural textures.»

In such an interior, you can find a completely modern entourage and landscape elements brought into the house in an almost original form. It can be a stone slab, saw cut of an old tree, oak planks of a battered barn, larch bridge supports that have stood in the water for decades, just snags and much, much more. All these items are processed for the purpose of serviceability, but no more. At the same time, the emphasis is not on the beauty of the material, but on the degree of its aging.

Thus, functional details with a unique texture appear in a modern house.

But this is just one of the directions of the rustic style, built on bright contrasts. A more restrained option is a provincial interior, decorated according to certain rules.

Rule one: no wallpaper. Although they can be paper, fabric, bamboo or soft felt, they remain a manufactured product.

Because rustic walls are plaster, preferably rough, with irregularities.

Less commonly, it is an unfinished lumber wall. Less often, because there is too much wooden texture in such a house and there is no point in adding any other spectacular details to it (except for the masonry of the fireplace).

The optimal wall decoration can be a combination of two materials from the following: plaster, stone, board, timber, brick.

For the floor: deck board, tile, stone.

For the ceiling: board, plaster, timber in the form of ceiling beams.

Rule two: only natural fabrics, and leather and fur — preferably high-quality imitation. All in the spirit of modern eco trends.

Rule three: maximum simplicity in everything, from forms to materials. And don’t let this bother you, because the interior turns out to be eclectic and it is these items that are easiest to “link” into a single ensemble.

The fourth rule indicates the color scheme: it is neutral for man-made materials, plus the natural color of natural textures.

The fifth rule does not exclude the accumulation of elements in a limited space, if at the same time it has acquired coziness and comfortable functionality.

Accessories will complete the overall picture: handicrafts, lamps, books in old bindings, photos or paintings in «grandfather’s» frames, plants in ceramic pots — everything is emphasized traditional, neutral, without pronounced national characteristics.

Private attic: features of arrangement

The decision to settle in the space under the roof is quite reasonable and rational. Perhaps the phrase «ecological style» (eco-style) will make you analogy with an eco-house and eco-villages. They have nothing in common except for the prefix «eco», just as it should not be attributed to its abbreviation from the word «saving». Let’s put it this way: the style of ecological modernism …
