Roman curtains: where and what are appropriate

Roman blinds have recently experienced their rebirth and «climbed» to the peak of popularity among textile window decoration.

The development of a minimalist trend in interior design has aroused the interest of decorators in this concise and elegant element of window design.

There is nothing superfluous in this curtain: no draperies, no massiveness.

When unfolded, it is a rectangular canvas, proudly showing the texture of the fabric.

But as soon as you pull the cord of the eaves, the rim will begin to be laid in uniform horizontal warehouses from the bottom up, gradually exposing the window panes.

Such an unconventional method of opening is due to the presence of a special cornice system, which, if desired, can be done by yourself.

But back to the Roman canvases. By the way, they are also called Romanesque.

There are two ways to “make” the canvas fold beautifully — with or without rods, and both of them are performed at the sewing stage. I will not describe in detail the sequence of operations, it is better to consider in detail the features of different types of Roman blinds.

All these features can be clearly seen on the wrong side of the Romanesque canvases.

So, any Roman in the lower part necessarily has a drawstring into which a weighting bar is tucked — this is the key to successful closing of the window with curtains, there is no way without it … The bar is a tape metal profile 2 mm thick and 20-25 mm wide. You can make it yourself by sanding the sections and covering them with white or another color of enamel.

With its upper part, the Roman is attached to the eaves in the following ways.

The first. With the help of a burdock braid, when the curtain is attached to a factory Roman cornice or a homemade bar. In this case, the canvas straightens out due to the tension at the top and bottom.

Second. By means of ordinary curtain tape (without assembly), when the canvas is attached with plastic hooks to the tire cornice (traditional cornice with tracks).

In this case, there is a risk that the top of the curtain will slightly gather. Therefore, it is recommended here, as well as below, to make a drawstring and fill it with the same bar or silicone (fiberglass, wooden, metal) rod.

An alternative solution is to lock the end hooks on the eaves with clamps (usually they are included in the hook kit or sold separately).

Third the way to decorate the top of the rims is to mount it on a rod cornice with decorative loops or ties.

This is the most sophisticated decor method, but it is applicable, as in the previous version, in combination with an additional drawstring, plus a rigid bar or rod.

In order for Romanesque canvases to be collected in uniform warehouses, markings are made on the wrong side into horizontal sections.

The vertical lines in the diagram are the locations of the cords, which, in fact, lift the curtain up.

As mentioned earlier, there are two ways to force the sections to be stockpiled: with and without bars. Each of them is divided into two more options.

The first and traditional version of curtains without rods is to sew plastic rings from the inside. Do this at the intersection of horizontal and vertical lines.

This operation does not require sewing skills and is available to an amateur.

Rings are recommended to be sewn onto coarse linen, jute and cotton canvases. For such canvases, rods are not required to stiffen horizontally. Warehouses are soft and natural, sometimes with a slight sag.

The second version of the Roman blind without rods is the stitching of a vertical braid. This is a special nylon tape with eyelets or rings.

The difficulty lies not only in the ability to sew the braid to the canvas beautifully without constrictions, but also in the correct calculation.

Loops or rings should be located strictly along the horizontal marking lines. Then the warehouses will be clear and uniform.

This type of curtain requires a lot of braid and is chosen by Western decorators. Apply it to thin and even transparent fabrics.

The third way, already with the use of rigid spacers, which requires certain tailoring skills, is to lay tucks of such a size on the wrong side or front side (depending on the taste of the designer) that they can be filled with a silicone or fiberglass rod.

Plastic rings are sewn from the inside.

This type of design is good for interiors in ethnic styles, when the curtain fabric is made of coarse, but thin fabric with an expressive texture such as «burlap» or «linen», or a pattern of horizontal stripes is played up.

The fourth way is to sew a special braid on the horizontal marking lines with a “pocket” for the rod and loops for threading the lifting cord.

Such a rim looks perfectly smooth on the front side, and when lifted, it fits neatly and easily into warehouses.

This processing option is absolutely universal, but it is most suitable for the thinnest fabrics and, conversely, for coarse fabrics with a pattern, where any thickening or violation of the pattern is undesirable.
