Design inside the house: ideas for building space

Not every future homeowner is ready to move away from the stereotypes of perception and look at the design inside the house in a different way.

But in fact, everything new in interior design is a well-forgotten old one in a shell of more modern finishing materials.

Moreover, design trends are aimed not only at creating new buildings, but also at modernizing old buildings. This is how an old fire station or a rural barn is transformed into new, sometimes luxurious apartments.

It makes no sense to publish a photo of the design of standard layouts — others have already taken care of this for a long time. I consider it more interesting to consider a non-standard approach to creating an extraordinary interior. And this is not a whim for the owners of «tight wallets». These are ideas for those who already own an old house, but do not know what to do with this “treasure”.

You should not give up looking at the photos below, realizing that all this costs a lot of money.

Be optimistic and try to minimize costs according to your ability, leaving the idea itself as the basis.

And in an old rural house or barn, you can do the following.

 • Remove the top cover and insulate the roof. So the ceiling will be raised to the level of the ridge, the space will not just increase due to the unused attic area — it will look huge. Especially if the walls are light and uniform from the baseboard to the roof vault.
 • Having carried out the previous technique, I recommend abandoning the traditional division of the interior into closed zones, preferring an open layout. How this can be done — further in the comments under the photo.
 • The internal appearance of the house can be radically changed by expanding the old window openings, laying some of them, or changing their configuration. For example, reduce the height and stretch it horizontally, or vice versa, lower the window sill to the lowest possible level and narrow the width of the window.

All this you will see further in the photo selection.

Do not rush to hide the old brickwork under the plaster. Against the backdrop of a brand new renovation, it will look just great, emphasizing the venerable age of the building. Therefore, leave the most spectacular details of the house (columns, ledges, an unusually shaped window opening, a free-standing wall, a wall with a fireplace, etc.) untouched.

The thick walls of the old building are evidence of its quality. But even more modern houses can be provided with such «dignity». To do this, the thickness of the walls is increased with a plasterboard construction, the cavity is filled with mineral wool or basalt insulation, plus they beat it all with an interesting design, leaving a niche in the wall or arranging a place for a comfortable seat in the window opening.

Everyone loves old quality houses, but sometimes they lack something modern, for example, a large window, on the windowsill of which you can arrange a place to relax…

Chalet-style buildings (squat houses with a sloping roof and wide overhangs) are unsuitable for arranging attics, but if you abandon the upper floor by insulating the roof slopes, the resulting space can be used to increase the height of the ceiling.

By the way, if you decide to restore the roof, it is not necessary to order such a wide beam as in the photo — it is difficult to find it, and it weighs impressively. It is enough to build a frame for drywall and sheathe it with thin laminated plywood. And then the roof vault will certainly become a respectable decoration of the interior. At the same time, the design itself inside the house can be quite modest in color and concise in content, as in the photo above.

The lack of buildings of the last century is the low ceiling height. However, it is easy to fix it by lowering the floor level to the depth of the lower level of the foundation. It is enough just to disassemble the lower floor, insulate and concrete the soil base.

Such a technique will justify itself in a large kitchen-living room, where a large floor and wall area visually «eats» the height of the room. How it all looks as a result — look at the top photo.

No, this is not a completed project, but just a designer’s fantasy. However, it may very well become a reality. Pay attention to how much space appears inside the house. when the wall smoothly flows into the roof slope without changing color. This effect is enhanced by large windows.

And this design photo inside the house clearly demonstrates how you can use the attic under the peaked roof of European-style buildings (we have few of these, but still found in places of former German settlements).

Here the attic was divided by a wall along the ridge and horizontally with the help of a ceiling. It turned out a two-level attic, which has a rest room below, and a sleeping place and, obviously, a bathroom at the top).

Another project worthy of attention. The house with a sloping roof was conditionally divided into two parts. In one of them there is a spacious living-dining room, in the other — a kitchen, a bathroom, a utility room (first level) and a sleeping area (second level).

An option for a small family or a suburban building.

The same design of the house inside, only from a different angle.

Another high attic is shown in the top photo. The large height of the under-roof space was divided into two levels: a living room and a mezzanine. A light staircase with railings leads upstairs, and what is located on the mezzanine, see the next photo…

The remaining height turned out to be enough to accommodate a bed and a bathroom here … no, not a room, but just a bathroom.

For us, this is not a usual solution. Although, equipping water relaxation right in the bedroom has long been considered a certain chic.

Beautifully beaten design inside this low house. Actually, this is just a project showing how you can move away from stereotypes in construction. There are no ceilings — only the mezzanine, combined with the under-roof space. The attic «booth» has windows instead of walls.

The floor and ceiling are finished with the same light laminate. The walls are completely neutral white. Inside there are glass partitions instead of walls. All in all. lots of natural light and a sense of extraordinary spaciousness flowing beyond the eco-style interior.

This photo shows a non-standard approach to the use of the internal space of a two-level building. No space savings. A huge central hall, on the sides of which there are two tiers of living rooms and premises for other purposes. But their area, apparently limited to a minimum size.

Say, a whim, but in fact such a house unites the family, forcing the tenants to retire only in case of emergency.

The same house, but from a different angle…

The interior of the house in the style of ecological modernism always impresses with its closeness to nature. It is not necessary to copy such a design, but using the idea of leaving an old tree on the territory of a future home is quite good. A dry trunk can easily become an original architectural detail of an interior in any style.

Another example of the use of raw wood in interior design. Shelves and stair railings are made of branches here.

This interior is a hypertrophied version of the rustic style.

And how sweet it is to sleep in a house with wooden walls. In winter it is cozy and warm, in summer it is pleasantly cool. It makes no sense to make a ceiling, and even if you also glaze the gable …

And this house is made of square timber, most likely glued. The advantage of the latter is that at the end of construction, the house will give minimal shrinkage, and there is no need to caulk the gaps between the logs due to their absence 🙂

But let’s turn to the design… It is as simple as possible and quite traditional. The «chip» of the interior is the original glazing and the huge space obtained due to the lack of an attic.

If the wooden walls inside the house seem boring to you, the design can be built on the contrast of color: honey tones of pine and dark contours of rosewood-colored ceiling beams and openings. Don’t forget to continue this idea in furnishing…

Another way to deprive the wooden walls of monotony is to make large windows — and then the change of the «picture» both during the day and according to the season is guaranteed to you!

This is not a photo or even a project — just a beautiful hand-drawn picture of the interior of a house in the forest. But what is a bad idea for a summer residence?

Well, this is a project, though already implemented (the notorious house on the Volga). The idea «I blinded him from what was» was transferred from the facade to the inside of the house. And I must admit, it works very well. And to make the heterogeneity of wooden elements look harmonious, the same tinting of wooden elements came to the rescue.

One of the rooms of the same house, only on the top floor.

Maybe for an ordinary residential building, the idea of putting the interior of a bedroom outside seems extravagant, but it will take root somewhere in the country. Especially if you put a bath in the allotted area …

If you remember, at the beginning of the article it was about the conversion of old non-residential buildings (barn, former fire station, industrial premises …). So, the design style of such interiors was called «loft». It is very original and unique.

Such an interior can be domesticated with the help of the usual wall decoration …

… Or you can leave the walls as they are, adding emphatically modern details for contrast.

Two dozen ways to enlarge a room

It is no secret that most interiors have dimensions that are far from the wishes of their owners. And even when we have the opportunity to design a house from scratch, the desire to save on space for the sake of reducing costs is stronger. Checked on personal experience)))

Private attic: features of arrangement

The decision to settle in the space under the roof is quite reasonable and rational. In addition to the fact that the attic is the most romantic place in the house overlooking the Milky Way, it is also the treasured square meters of additional living space. Here you can equip a relaxation room and a winter garden, a games room …

From wood for the interior: design ideas

You can make the interior of a private house stylish and cozy with just two materials: textiles and wood. And at the same time, repairs inside the premises can be the most unpretentious, up to rough plastering on the walls and simple painting of the wooden floor.

Residential The mezzanine is a burning topic for me, because in my house I decided to abandon the floors and the attic in favor of the “big shelf”. The room (alas, while the construction is still not an interior) immediately acquired volume, a lot of ideas appeared on how to use the space under …
